Personal Injury Law in Ireland
Make Your Business Safer
No one likes an accident. That's a fact, but it is also a fact that accidents can and do happen every day. Stores, businesses, shops (mechanic's shops, craft shops), public places, recreational areas, and construction sites - among others - always have a risk of someone getting injured on their property. And the danger of someone getting hurt in a small business can be especially devastating to the small business owner.
While there is little you can do after an accident happens, as the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That is to say, doing a few things and making a few changes can make a world of difference between having to contact your insurance company because of a customer or employee accident and feeling confident that you won't have to deal with injuries in your business.
Protecting yourself, your employees, and your customers and visitors from injury boils down to common sense practices:
- Make sure floors are kept dry during inclement weather
- Put down rubber mats and absorbent carpets near entryways so that customers' and visitors' shoes can be dried off as they enter your establishment in snowy or rainy weather
- If possible, put an employee in charge of mopping up wet footprints and tracked-in water near the entries and exits
- Have an employee put up "Wet Floor" signs whenever they've cleaned up water spills, tracked in rainwater, or other liquids
- Mark potentially dangerous areas with signs warning your customers where appropriate, such as "low ceiling," "sloped floor," or "low step."
- Mark areas that require head protection, hearing protection, gloves, or other safety equipment plainly and prominently
- Distribute safety procedures to your staff so they know what to do in case an accident happens
- Make sure your insurance premiums are up-to-date in case an accident occurs
In winter time, it's important to remember to have your parking areas cleared of ice and snow, and any ice or snow build-up removed from your outdoor entryways.
In the end, a few small steps can help protect your business from ever having to deal with a personal injury. But, if you do need help, don't hesitate to talk to a solicitor for more information about legal protection for your business.
