Divorce and Debts
One of the more common questions asked about divorce is whether someone can be held responsible for a spouse's debts after a divorce. While the answer is complicated, the simplest answer is: "yes."
Typically, when a couple gets divorced, both parties are still responsible for those debts incurred while the couple was together unless there is a separation or other agreement in place that absolves one party from being held responsible for the other's debts. One of the solutions to a problem such as this is to start paying down the debts you have if you're even thinking about divorce.
Because of the costs associated with getting a divorce, the money you save on interest payments on debts can help you out in the long run. Consider also some other ways you can decrease the amount of money spent every month, too:
- Cut back on magazine subscriptions
- Get a slower, less expensive Internet connection
- Get a television package with fewer channels, or eliminate cable altogether
- Cut back on long-distance telephone calls wherever possible
- Get take-away food less often and eat home more
- Cut back speciality coffees to one or two days a week
- Bring lunch from home with you to work
- Drive to work with others whenever possible, or take public transportation to save on petrol costs
- Combine errands so that you make fewer trips
There are probably many other ways you can think of where you can cut expenses so that you can afford to pay down your debt quicker. This is an important task if you're thinking about divorce and have a lot of debts. Even if you're not considering getting a divorce, paying down your current debts can help you in the long run to lessen the stress in your life.
