Family Law in Ireland
Divorce Statistics
As mentioned elsewhere in this site, divorce was not granted Ireland until the mid-1990s. Since then, one out of every six marriages ends in divorce. Since the year 2000, divorces have increased 25%, and the number of divorce applications greatly outnumbers the amount of divorces granted. In the EU, 40 marriages out of every hundred end in divorce. Among the EU states, Ireland has one of the lowest divorce rates at 0.7%.
In 2004, 3,347 divorces were granted in Ireland. Accurate statistics for divorce applications are difficult to ascertain, mostly because of the "in camera" rule in which family law proceedings in Ireland are closed and private and are not subject to reports.
