Make Your Business Safer for Employees

Accidents at work happen almost every day. Many of these injuries can be avoided with proper training, equipment, and safety procedures. While most companies have already considered safety measures for employees in one way or another, it's always important to periodically go over your safety procedures and protocol with supervisors, managers, safety personnel, and employees.

Here is a quick - and far from exhaustive - checklist of things you might want to consider for your business' safety practices:

  • Every few months (or weeks, depending on your industry and how often it changes), go over your company's safety manual. Look for ways it can be updated, clarified, or changed for your benefit and the benefit of your employees.
  • Discuss changes with your safety personnel, managers, supervisors, and employees. Get everyone's opinion on areas where safety could be improved or new procedures put into place.
  • Once you've decided on any changes, make sure that each and every person on your payroll gets a copy of the new safety procedures.
  • Post the safety procedures in lunch rooms, in a place where they can be readily seen
  • In the food service industry, it is important for the safety of employees and customers that hygeine standards be posted in restrooms and in the main section of the restaurant. These should be prominently displayed.
  • Go over your training manuals and procedures and make sure that they are current with your equipment. Make sure the operators of such equipment know how to shut the machinery off in case of an emergency
  • Consider investing in safety classes for employees.
  • Make sure that safety equipment (hard hats, gloves, eye protection, aprons, etc) are readily available and well-maintained. Employees are more likely to use safety equipment if it is provided to them at no charge.
  • Schedule regular, routine inspections of machinery and equipment for defects.
  • Set up a regular maintenance schedule for all equipment.

When employees are trained in safety measures, the whole work environment becomes a safer place to work. When equipment is regularly checked for safety standards, employees are safer.

These are just a few tips to provide a safer workplace for your staff. A safer work environment benefits everybody from management to employees to customers.
