Personal Injury Law in Ireland

Injuries in Stores or Public Buildings

The instances of sustaining injuries in stores or public buildings are rare, but they do happen. Most businesses and public areas are well-maintained for the most part. Of course, there is always the chance that an accident can happen. Slippery floors, broken or cracked flooring, low steps, spilled liquids... all of these and more can cause an accident in a public place at any time.

Your best defense against a personal injury accident in a store, shop, or public building is, again, to be aware of what's going on around you. Paying attention to your environment can often save you from a painful accident.

When going out to stores and shops, look for signs that mark potentially dangerous areas, such as sloped entryways, heaving floors, cracked tiles, icy areas in the winter, and signs that mark where floors have recently been wet.

The potential for injury can be even greater when remodeling or construction is being conducted, so it is very important to avoid injury by paying attention to signs and other written directions at the location. These are areas that the site manager, owner, supervisor, or other authority knows to be a potentially dangerous area. If areas are marked that you must wear head protection or ear protection, it is in your best interest and safety that you use the recommended safety equipment, even if you're only going to be there a few minutes. A lot can happen in a short amount of time, so heeding warnings could save you pain and suffering from a personal injury accident.

If an area has not been marked as dangerous, it's up to you to know what dangers and risks are around you. In rainy, snowy, or other inclement weather, be aware of areas that maintenance crews might not have gotten a chance to clean up yet; these can pose very dangerous accident risks.

Sometimes, despite our vigilence and intentions, accidents happen. If you've been injured in a store or public place through no fault of your own, first, seek medical attention. As soon as you are able, contact a solicitor about your case. Describe the circumstances of your personal injury accident, and your solicitor will then be able to help you navigate the tricky waters of Irish personal injury claims.

As with other personal injury cases, your solicitor will be able to intercede on your behalf with any applicable insurance companies. To avoid litigation, most insurance companies will agree to settle out of court for compensation, and this is much more likely if a solicitor represents you.
